Alberta Culture Days - online and in person

Discover, experience and celebrate arts and culture during Alberta Culture Days, September 1-30, 2020. The annual three-day festival has been expanded to a month-long celebration and Red Deerians are invited to join the fun at over 20 local events happening online, in person and outdoors. Alberta Culture Days showcases many forms of art and culture celebrated in our community with a variety of interactive activities. Most activities are free to attend and family friendly. Open House at the Norwegian Laft Hus - AB Culture Days

In-Person Events - Come and see our creative arts displays such as Rosemaling painting, Hardanger embroidery, Klokkestreng wall hanging and Hallingdal embroidery. Find out where your family might come from using our maps and enjoy our book exhibit. All this happens in our log house with a sod roof. See our museum artifacts and shop in our Buttik. 'The Sharing Circle' Children’s Local Author Presentation- Alberta Culture Days

Children’s Local Author Presentation The Sharing Circle - Theresa “Corky” Larsen-Jonasson YouTube premiere https://www.youtube.com/rdplorg Facebook Live panel discussion - https://www.facebook.com/reddeerpubliclibrary/ 6 p.m.- 7 p.m. Meet our special guest, Theresa “Corky” Larsen-Jonasson. Corky will introduce us to her traditions of oral storytelling and the important teachings discussed in her book, the Sharing Circle. Theresa "Corky" Larsen-Jonasson is a proud Cree/Danish Métis Elder with roots in Red Deer and Maskwacis First Nations. She lives her life according to the traditional Indigenous teachings that saved her life. These teachings flow from her parents, her 93-year-old Kokom, Christine Joseph of Cochrane, aunties, uncles, as well as from the Goodstrikers, Williams and John Crier families, all of whom she loves immensely. The presentation will be shown at schools the day after on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/rdplorg) and at Red Deer Arts Council website (https://www.reddeerartscouncil.ca/) on the last weekend of September.

2020 Celebration of Multicultural Arts and Culture

On September 25th, as a Host Celebration Site, Central Alberta Refugee Effort and Urban Aboriginal Voices are inviting the public to attend a drumming circle, "All Tribes " from 1pm - 3pm , and dance demonstrations from 3.30pm - 5.30pm to create a performance called "Unexpected Intersections".

Family Literary Scavenger Hunt

Self-Guided Tour Get your team together and follow clues through downtown Red Deer to discover the titles of well-known literary works and win prizes! Each team needs a cell phone or camera. Each team must have at least one adult. Clue sheets can be printed off from rdpl.org or picked up at any library branch. Saturday, September 26 from 10:00am - 3:00pm around downtown Red Deer

Community Art Project

Join local artist Erin Boake in the creation of a community art piece thanking front line workers. This painting project is suitable for all ages and all levels of art experience. Final work will be permanently displayed at Red Deer Regional Hospital. Physical distancing in effect, sanitizer and masks provided. All supplies provided by The City of Red Deer. FREE to participate. There are two dates to choose from: Saturday, September 19 at Roland Plaza (4804 50 Avenue) and Saturday, September 26 at Imperial Block (4919 49 Street).

Mini Open Studio Tour in the Glass Front Art Gallery - Alberta Culture Days

On the final Saturday of Alberta Culture Days, The Red Deer Arts Council will be offering a glimpse of our annual Open Studio Tour (postponed until June 2021) with visual artists demonstrating their creative process in some of the glass-front gallery windows. Artists will also provide demonstrations in some windows of their artistic technique to enliven the day. Downtown Venues for Artists: Scott Block, 4816 50 Avenue Roland Plaza, 4804 50 Avenue (the old Great Strides shoe store) Wolf and Crown Tattoo, 8 – 4919 49 Street Red Deer Arts Council is pleased to presents this socially-distanced in-person event.
