Reel Movie Mondays: Indian Horse (Special Screening!)

Hosted by the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery and Carnival Cinemas, in partnership with Film Circuit, presented by TIFF. *Please note that Indian Horse is not part of the Spring 2019 Reel Movie Mondays series and is not included in any Package pricing. Directed by Stephen Campanelli, Rated 14A Canada | 101 minutes | English, Elevation Pictures About the Film: An adaption of Ojibway writer Richard Wagamese's award-winning novel, this moving and important drama sheds light on the dark history of Canada's Indigenous Residential Schools and the indomitable spirit of aboriginal people. Indian Horse stars Canadian newcomers Sladen Peltier and Edna Manitowabi, as well as Ajuawak Kapashesit (Once Upon a River), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Michael Murphy (Away From Her), Michael Lawrenchuck (Tokyo Cowboy), Johnny Issaluk (Two Lovers and a Bear) and Michiel Huisman (The Age of Adaline). In the late 1950's Ontario, eight-year-old Saul Indian Horse is torn from his Ojibway family and committed to one of the notorious Catholic Residential Schools. In this oppressive environment, Saul is denied the freedom to speak his language or embrace his Indigenous heritage while he witnesses horrendous abuse at the hands of the very people entrusted with his care. Despite this, Saul finds salvation in the unlikeliest of places and a favourite winter pastime -- hockey. Fascinated by the game, he secretly teaches himself to play, developing a unique and rare skill. He seems to see the game in a way no other player can. His talent leads him away from the misery of the school, eventually leading him to the Pros. But the ghosts of Saul's past are always present, and threaten to derail his promising career and future. Forced to confront his painful past, Saul draws on the spirit of his ancestors and the understanding of his friends to begin the process of healing. Tickets are on sale now! Purchase your tickets online at www.reddeermuseum.com, stop by the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery in person, or give us a call at 403.309.8405. Tickets are $8 each for valid MAG Members, and $10 each for Non-Members, up until 4:30 pm on film nights. Friendship Circle provides opportunities to develop and strengthen relationships, participate in community life, and enhance leadership and mentoring abilities. You can expect to improve your physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health; create a sense of inclusion and belonging; counteract the effects of stress and become more resilient. In Friendship Circle we nurture healthy habits through creativity and fun. Together we build self-awareness, acceptance, gratitude, positive self-regard and unity; and outreach for stigma busting and transformation. This is a free drop-in support group. We encourage you to call before you come to your first session.
